NSP Celebrates 70 Years of Sorghum Growth and Progress
Seventy years ago, five sorghum growers in the Texas Panhandle paved the way for the crop's inclusion in government farm programs. At that time, corn, wheat, and soybeans already had a seat at the table, but sorghum was left out. However, through the efforts of these pioneers, by 1956, sorghum found its spot.
National Sorghum Producers CEO Tim Lust believes those growers would be proud of how far sorghum has come and the organization NSP has become. He thinks they would not be satisfied with stopping there, though, as they met to give sorghum a seat at the table in federal farm policy.
Lust credits the durable, producer-led voice in farm policy as one thing that stands out. 'Sorghum's inclusion in the federal farm program was the first win,' he said. He also points to producer investment and collaboration as key developments that have led to a more diversified crop economy.
