Nuclear Waste Could Unlock a Vast Energy Treasure
Oklo, a company that's been making waves in the nuclear energy sector, claims that the US has a treasure trove of usable energy waiting to be tapped. According to Oklo CEO Jacob DeWitte, the 94,000 metric tons of spent nuclear fuel stored in facilities across the country contains enough energy to power the equivalent of 1.3 trillion barrels of oil - five times Saudi Arabia's estimated oil reserves.
This is not just a theoretical concept; Oklo has already announced plans to build a $1.68 billion advanced fuel center project, which includes a fuel recycling facility in Tennessee that will recover usable fuel material from used nuclear fuel and fabricate it into fuel for advanced reactors.
The proposed recycling process would not only generate significant amounts of energy but also reduce waste volumes and shorten the half-life of the material from tens of thousands of years to just a few hundred years. This, according to DeWitte, could turn waste into gigawatts, reducing costs and establishing a secure US supply chain for clean, reliable, and affordable power.
