NYK Invests $221 Million in Mitsubishi's LNG Investment Vehicle
Japanese shipping giant Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) is strengthening its relationship with Mitsubishi's LNG investment vehicle, Diamond Gas MidOcean. The company will invest $221 million in the entity by subscribing to 211.9 million newly issued shares, giving it an 87.4% stake.
The deal aims to pair NYK's equity move with a strategic LNG-shipping partnership, which could give NYK a steadier pipeline of shipping work tied to MidOcean's volumes. Diamond Gas MidOcean was created in 2023 to invest in MidOcean Energy, an LNG platform backed by US private equity firm EIG.
The investment is not about owning a visible slice of MidOcean but rather aligning the whole chain: LNG supply relationships, the cargoes they generate, and the ships that move them. This matters because LNG carriers are costly assets, and shipowners prefer long-term charters over relying on spot rates.
