Odisha Governor Pushes for Domestic Edible Oil Production
Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati emphasized the need to accelerate domestic edible oil production under the National Mission on Edible Oils, Oil Palm (NMEO-OP) during a review meeting in Bhubaneswar.
The Governor stated that India continues to import a substantial quantity of edible oil, resulting in a significant outflow of foreign exchange. He noted that increasing domestic production would strengthen the national economy and enhance self-reliance.
Kambhampati highlighted the advantages of oil palm cultivation, saying it yields four to five times more oil per unit area than conventional oilseed crops and remains productive for nearly 30 years.
The Governor suggested that Odisha has the potential to become a major contributor to India's edible oil self-sufficiency due to its favourable agro-climatic conditions and vast cultivable land.
