Ogoniland Oil Resumption Halted Amid Credibility Concerns
The proposed resumption of oil production in Ogoniland after over three decades may face challenges due to concerns raised by four local government areas in the region. KAGOTE, an umbrella body representing Khana, Gokana, Tai, and Eleme LGAs, expressed worries about alleged moves to commence oil activities while consultations with the federal government were ongoing.
The Ogoni Dialogue Committee (ODC) was inaugurated by the federal government in January 2025 to engage stakeholders on resuming oil production in Ogoniland. The committee's mandate includes resolving longstanding concerns, rebuilding trust, and strengthening relations between the federal government and the Ogoni people.
President of KAGOTE, Chief Lesi Maol, commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to addressing the Ogoni people's concerns. However, Maol raised concerns about the conduct of some individuals within ODC, saying their actions require urgent clarification and intervention to preserve the credibility of the dialogue process.
Maol stated that there is growing apprehension among sections of the Ogoni population that certain oil-related activities may have commenced in parts of Ogoniland while consultations between the federal government and Ogoni stakeholders remain ongoing. He called for greater transparency in order to ensure that the benefits of the federal government's initiative are fairly distributed across Ogoniland.
