Oil Disruptions and Battery Breakthroughs Set to Boost Electric Vehicle Adoption

Disruptions in the oil market and advancements in battery technology are likely to give electric vehicles (EVs) a significant push, according to Wood Mackenzie. The consultancy noted that conflicts involving major oil producers Russia and Iran have led to higher energy costs and supply chain vulnerabilities, making it more appealing for governments and consumers to adopt EVs.

WoodMac also highlighted the rapid progress in battery technology, with China advancing ultra-fast charging capabilities that can replenish batteries in about five minutes. This has sparked concerns among Western nations that they may need to bolster their own EV technology initiatives or acquire licenses for Chinese innovations to remain competitive and reduce their vulnerability to oil price volatility.

The consultancy predicts that these dynamics will gradually erode petroleum consumption, with worldwide oil usage potentially declining to 99 million barrels per day by 2040. David Brown, a co-author of the report, noted that if EV innovation accelerates beyond U.S. borders, Washington may eventually be compelled to treat transportation electrification with greater urgency, particularly if American manufacturers wish to stay competitive in both domestic and international markets.
