Oil Giants Post Record Profits Amid Geopolitical Turmoil
The oil industry's profit surge is gaining attention, with major Western companies expected to record a combined $44 billion in profits for Q2 2026. This surpasses previous quarterly totals, except for those reached during 2022 when crude oil prices exceeded $120 per barrel.
A recent analysis by @KobeissiLetter points to a structural shift in the industry's profitability. Companies are achieving near-record levels of profit without relying on extremely high oil prices. This suggests that operational efficiency, cost management, and other market variables play a more significant role in revenue generation.
ExxonMobil reported $14.7 billion in profit, its strongest quarter since Q3 2022. Chevron set a record with $12.1 billion, surpassing its own peak established in 2022. Shell announced a profit of $9.8 billion, the second-largest quarterly profit in the company's history.
The geopolitical context surrounding the Iran War and the COVID-19 pandemic may be contributing to this trend. However, @KobeissiLetter emphasizes that oil companies are reaping gains amid these events, suggesting that other factors are at play.
