Oil Leak Spreads Devastation Near Hormuz Strait
A massive oil leak has been discovered in the ocean near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil trade. Satellite imagery shows two oil slicks in Iranian waters, one off the southern tip of Qeshm Island and another near Sirri Island.
The Qeshm slick is particularly concerning, with estimates suggesting it has spread over 100 miles. John Amos, CEO of SkyTruth, described it as 'the biggest one that I've seen in recent months' since the conflict between Iran and the US began.
Environmental researcher Wim Zwijnenburg noted that parts of the slick are dark, indicating heavy fuel oil. The leak is likely from a ship that was attacked near Oman's coast on August 3, according to Samir Madani of TankerTrackers.com.
