Oil Price Bump Lifts Credit Outlook for Global Oil Producers
According to Moody's Ratings report, the first half of 2026 saw an improvement in credit conditions for global oil and gas producers. Higher crude prices have boosted earnings expectations for exploration and production (E&P) companies.
The number of upgrades outpaced downgrades during this period, with 13 oil and gas companies globally upgraded by Moody's compared to seven downgrades. E&P companies led the industry in upgrades, recording six improvements during the first half, including a notable upgrade for Permian Resources in April, which became investment grade.
Moody's attributed the upgrade to strong operating performance, reserve-replacement capabilities, prudent capital allocation, and conservative financial policies. The agency also identified Viper Energy and Antero Resources as potential 'rising stars,' meaning they could move into investment-grade territory in the future.
