Oil Price Surge and Earnings Reports Weigh on Wall Street Stocks

Wall Street stocks edged lower on Thursday as oil prices rose and companies reported their latest financial results. The S&P 500 fell 0.2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 403 points, or 0.7%. The Nasdaq composite also declined by 0.1%.

The losses come after a strong start to August, with stocks setting records on Tuesday. However, investors remain cautious due to concerns about inflation and the jobs market.

Clark Bellin, president of Bellwether Wealth, noted that August is typically a volatile month for stocks. He also pointed out that 85% of companies in the S&P 500 have reported their results, with overall earnings growth shaping up to be the strongest since 2021.

Oil prices rose by 4.1% as uncertainty remains over the US war with Iran and the impact on global oil supplies. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route, is currently closed due to the conflict. This has led to higher gas prices and added costs for shipping goods.

Higher inflation rates have been squeezing businesses and households, while threatening to crimp broader economic growth. The US economy expanded at a sluggish 1.5% pace during the second quarter.
