Oil Prices Dip as Iran, Oman Make Progress in Strait of Hormuz Talks

Global oil prices dipped slightly on Wednesday after Iranian and Omani officials announced progress in talks to manage traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. A joint statement from both countries outlined a phased framework for creating a temporary shipping corridor, allowing vessels to pass through the waterway.

The framework includes mine-clearing efforts in the strait and could provide a basis for advancing negotiations on permanent navigation. Despite the agreement's unclear details, the joint statement highlighted its potential as a 'practical and viable basis' for resolving the issue.

The dip in oil prices comes amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States over control of the critical oil shipping route. The U.S. has blocked the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in only five vessels crossing on Tuesday. Qatari and Pakistani officials have been mediating talks towards a ceasefire in the war that began on February 28.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized the country's commitment to peace and stability through diplomacy with its neighbors. The U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, however, announced an 'economic D-Day' against Iran on Monday, threatening penalties for countries trading with or helping Tehran evade sanctions.
