Oil Prices Fall as Iran-Qatar Talks Aim to Ease Strait of Hormuz Disruptions
Oil prices fell for a fifth day on Thursday as talks between Iran and Qatar aimed to ease supply disruptions from the Middle East war. The Strait of Hormuz, which connects major Gulf oil producers to markets, has seen its oil flows drop to about one-quarter of their pre-war level.
The U.S. has halted attacks on Iran for a month, seeking to impose greater economic pressure on the country. However, Iranian officials have stated that the strait will not open unless the U.S. meets Tehran's conditions under an interim ceasefire agreement struck in June.
ANZ's senior commodity strategist, Daniel Hynes, pointed out that concerns over shortages in the oil market persist despite the improved prospects of the Strait of Hormuz reopening.
