Oil Prices Fall as Wall Street Stocks See Mixed Results Amid Escalating Trade War
Stocks on Wall Street experienced a mixed day of trading as oil prices declined for the first time in a week. The S&P 500 rose by 0.1%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.5%. However, the Nasdaq composite fell by 0.6%.
The decline in oil prices was led by Brent crude, which dropped nearly 4% to settle at $96.78 per barrel after previously reaching $102 a barrel earlier in the week. The heavy fighting in the Middle East has threatened to slow the global flow of oil and gas, with many buffers in the energy market weakened.
Treasury yields also moved lower in the bond market. European markets rose, but Asian markets closed lower. The U.S. is ramping up its trade war with fresh tariffs on dozens of nations, which could result in hotter inflation and impact the Federal Reserve's interest rate policy.
