Oil Prices Jump 6% as Regional Tensions Escalate
Oil prices made a strong comeback on Wednesday, rising by 6% to trade above $83.00 during the European trading session. This rebound comes after three consecutive days of losses due to concerns over a prolonged energy supply squeeze.
The key driver behind this price surge is the potential for increased military aggression between Iran and Yemen's Houthis. The latter are considering imposing tolls on commercial ships passing through the Southern Red Sea, which could disrupt almost 7% of global oil supplies.
This development adds to existing tensions in the region, where Iran was prevented from implementing a toll system at the Strait of Hormuz by the US and other Middle East nations. Analysts at Rabobank noted that 'the evolving cycle of attacks and counterattacks is keeping a firm bid under crude benchmarks.'
