Oil Prices Plummet 7% as US-Iran Conflict Pauses
Oil prices plummeted by 7% on Monday to hit a weekly low after the US and Iran paused strikes over the weekend. This pause in military actions raised hopes for a diplomatic solution that could de-escalate the conflict and allow shipping to resume in the Strait of Hormuz.
Brent crude futures fell $7.55, or about 7.8%, to $89.23 a barrel by 11:02 GMT (14:02 Kyiv time), while US West Texas Intermediate crude was at $83.30 a barrel, down $6.01, or about 6.73%. Both contracts are trading at their lowest levels since July 20.
PVM analyst John Evans noted that 'the market seems to be constantly looking for good news from an arena that really doesn't provide it.' He emphasized that a halt to military strikes does not guarantee that oil will soon flow from the region, and that prices will only continue to fall if high prices again reduce demand.
