Oil Prices Plummet Amid Fresh Hopes for Strait of Hormuz Reopening

Oil prices dropped about 2% on Wednesday following fresh hopes that the Strait of Hormuz could reopen after Iran and Oman resumed talks to manage the waterway. The price drop comes as both Brent crude futures and US West Texas Intermediate crude futures lost more than 3% on Tuesday.

The market is reacting to developments surrounding navigation through the Strait, with analysts pointing out that hopes for progress in talks between Iran and Oman have triggered selling. However, uncertainty over the outlook has prompted bargain buying, limiting further losses, according to Mitsuru Muraishi, an analyst at Fujitomi Securities.

The talks between Iran and Oman aim to establish a joint temporary navigational corridor through the Strait and clear it of mines. This comes as the US is beginning to send personnel back to some diplomatic missions in the Middle East that were evacuated or downsized amid tensions with Iran, suggesting Washington sees a lower risk of conflict escalation.

The move by the US is accompanied by an expansion of sanctions aimed at cutting off Iran's economic lifeline. An oil tanker was also struck on Tuesday by an unidentified projectile and disabled about 9 nautical miles northeast of Oman's Ash Shishah, which lies at the entrance to the Strait.
