Oil Prices Plummet Amid Tensions in the Red Sea
World oil prices plummeted on July 31st as tensions escalated in the Red Sea. The WTI and Brent oil prices decreased by 1.04% and 1.41% respectively, with WTI oil price dropping to $82.72 USD/barrel and Brent oil price falling to $85.98 USD/barrel.
The sharp decrease is attributed to Saudi Arabia's efforts to establish an international alliance to protect maritime activities in the Red Sea from Houthi attacks in Yemen. This move aims to maintain the safety of sea transport routes and limit the risk of global trade disruption.
The Houthi declared a blockade of Saudi Arabia's maritime route last week, claiming responsibility for attacks targeting oil tankers and the country's energy infrastructure. This has increased concerns about Saudi Arabia's daily exports of millions of barrels of crude oil, particularly through the Red Sea.
