Oil Prices Plummet Amid US-Iran Negotiation Uncertainty
Oil prices continued their downward trend on August 5 as investors await potential progress in negotiations between the US and Iran to end the war. The Brent crude futures price dropped by $1.92, or 1.2%, to $78.44 per barrel.
The overall decline in the Brent price since the start of the week has been more than 12%. Meanwhile, U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell by $1.07, or 1.4%, to $74.70 per barrel, with its price down by over 11% for the week.
The market is uncertain due to Tehran's denial of US President Donald Trump's claims that negotiations are taking place. Priyanka Sachdeva, head of market research at Phillip Nova, noted that the current drop in oil prices may be temporary.
She emphasized, 'Although the immediate geopolitical premium has disappeared, the broader supply picture calls for caution.' Analysts note that before the war with Iran began, approximately 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passed through the Strait of Hormuz. The main uncertainty remains the future status of this strategic maritime route.
