Oil Prices Plummet as Hormuz Deal Hopes Outrun Ship Flows
The price of crude oil futures fell sharply on Monday, dropping by nearly 8% as hopes for a deal to ease tensions in the Strait of Hormuz outran the actual flow of ships. The drop brought prices down to their lowest level since mid-July, with some analysts warning that the market may be pricing in too much optimism.
The drawdown in commercial crude stocks is continuing, hitting its lowest level since 2018 last week and sparking concerns about supply. Despite OPEC+'s decision to increase quotas by 188,000 barrels per day in September, the move has been largely met with skepticism as long as shipping lanes remain impaired.
The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains critical, with Revolutionary Guard forces stopping two tankers and turning four others back on Friday. The tanker data has not changed, and analysts warn that the market may be pricing in too much optimism about a diplomatic solution.
