Oil Prices Plummet as Iran Deal Hopes Grow
Oil prices have taken a significant hit after dropping below $80 per barrel for Brent crude. The price of Brent fell to an intraday low of $78.5, a decline of over 1%. This decrease has also affected US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil, which fell towards $75, its lowest level since mid-July.
The selloff in oil prices is attributed to growing speculation that a deal may soon be reached to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Reports indicate that Washington, Tehran, and Oman are engaged in advanced negotiations for a temporary arrangement guaranteeing commercial vessel passage and preventing further military escalation in the Middle East.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hinted at the possibility of finalizing a deal soon, while European forces are reportedly being considered to assist in clearing sea mines from the area. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway for global oil supply, with around 20% of the world's oil passing through it.
