Oil Prices Plummet as Iran, Oman Pursue Safe Navigation Deal
International oil prices plummeted over 3% on August 25, Eastern Time. WTI crude fell to $82.07 and Brent crude dropped to $87.41. Rich Privorotsky, head of Goldman Sachs' hedge fund business, warned that direct U.S. sanctions against Asian refiners could increase trade friction and bring new uncertainty to energy markets.
Privorotsky believes falling prices are reinforcing the market's bearish narrative. He noted, 'Prices drive narrative; once prices fall enough, old arguments about price deflation, saturation, and competition suddenly start sounding very convincing.'
The Iran-Oman joint statement aimed at restoring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz has also drawn attention. The two sides discussed a phased framework to establish a temporary joint maritime corridor in the strait.
