Oil Prices Plummet as Trump Halts Iran Strikes
Oil prices plummeted following an announcement by President Trump that US strikes on Iran would be paused to allow for further diplomatic discussions. The New York Times reported that this development led to a reduction in the risk premium associated with the conflict, causing a sharp decline in Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices.
Brent crude fell below $90 a barrel, with some reports placing it below $88, while WTI was around $83-$85 a barrel. The temporary halt in hostilities between the US and Iran suggests a potential easing of disruption risks to Middle East energy flows, including transit through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The market for crude oil all-time high predictions reflects a decline in the likelihood of reaching new highs by September 30. Market pricing suggests a 25% decrease in the likelihood of crude oil reaching a new all-time high by that date, with current odds at 4.8%. For December 31, the odds stand at 12.5%.
