Oil Prices Plummet as Trump Suspends US Military Strikes on Iran
Global oil prices plummeted on Monday after the United States temporarily suspended its military strikes on Iran. Brent crude futures fell by $8.42, or 8.7%, to $88.36 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropped by $6.70, or 7.5%, to $82.61 a barrel. The price decline was the lowest since July 17 for Brent and July 16 for WTI.
The conflict in the Middle East had disrupted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and led to a brief spike in prices last week, with Brent briefly climbing above $100 a barrel. However, US President Donald Trump announced that Washington and Tehran were engaged in constructive discussions aimed at ending the conflict, leading to a temporary suspension of military operations.
Despite this development, oil prices continued to weaken throughout the trading session. Industry participants expect oil price volatility to remain elevated due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the conflict. Analysts point out that any further decline in oil prices would depend on high prices starting to curb demand rather than an uncertain ceasefire alone.
