Oil Prices Plummet as US-Iran Hostilities Pause
Oil prices plummeted on Monday following the United States' halt of strikes against Iran and Tehran's reciprocal pause in hostilities over the weekend. West Texas Intermediate crude settled at $83.75 per barrel, a decline of more than 6% from the previous day, while Brent crude dipped to $86.73.
The Strait of Hormuz remains closed, leaving the market highly sensitive to any new developments that could trigger a reversal in either direction. Analysts describe the current pause as a 'ceasefire premium' removal.
Over the past month, WTI has surged 20.8%, and its year-to-date gain stands at 45.7% driven by conflict-related factors. The market is now pricing roughly 50/50 odds on resolution versus re-escalation, with a potential for renewed conflict already present.
