Oil Prices Plummet as US-Iran Talks Fail to Yield Clear Progress
Oil prices continued their downward trend on Wednesday as investors remained cautious about the outcome of US-Iran talks. Brent crude futures fell by $0.92, or 1.2%, to reach $78.44 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures dropped by $1.07, or 1.4%, to stand at $74.70 a barrel.
This week's decline marks the third consecutive day of falls for oil prices, with Brent crude plummeting more than 12% and WTI falling over 11%. The drop is largely attributed to investors' uncertainty about the success of diplomatic efforts to end the Iran war and restore traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Qatar said on Tuesday that mediators were making progress in their efforts, which has driven oil prices lower. However, Tehran has denied US President Donald Trump's claim that talks are underway.
Priyanka Sachdeva, head of market insights at Phillip Nova, warned that while the immediate geopolitical premium has unwound, the broader supply picture warrants caution. If diplomatic efforts fail and physical supply is affected, the current pullback could prove short-lived, with tighter inventories amplifying the impact of any future supply shock.
