Oil Prices Plummet as US-Iran Tensions Ease
Oil prices plummeted on Tuesday as tensions between the US and Iran eased following diplomatic initiatives. The International benchmark Brent crude fell over 6.5% to approximately $86.20 per barrel, while the US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) declined by 5.5% to settle at $80.40 per barrel.
The sharp decline in oil prices came as Pakistan's army chief visited Tehran to support diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran. Qatar also stated that it was continuing its mediation efforts between the two parties.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said countries currently trading with Iran would be given a deadline to wind down their commercial ties or face unilateral penalties, adopting a phased approach that eased concerns of immediate severe disruption to Iranian oil exports.
