Oil Prices Plummet as US-Iran Tensions Ease
The US-Iran conflict has taken a significant turn as tensions cool down, leading to a drop in crude oil prices. On Wall Street, stocks opened higher on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.5% and the S&P 500 edging up less than 0.1%. The Nasdaq composite fell 0.2%, its fourth straight loss.
Oil prices plummeted after a week of escalating tensions between the US and Iran, which had pushed Brent crude above $100 a barrel. On Monday, Brent crude dropped 6.3% to settle at $85.87 a barrel for October delivery, while US crude oil for September delivery fell 7.5% to $82.61 a barrel.
The easing of tensions has had a ripple effect on the global economy, with gasoline prices surging and shipping costs rising. Markets in Europe and Asia closed higher on Monday, while bond yields fell as the yield on the 10-year Treasury dropped to 4.65% from 4.69% late Friday.
