Oil Prices Plummet Below $80 Amid US-Iran Diplomatic Efforts
Global oil prices continued to decline on Wednesday, with Brent crude slipping below $80 per barrel amid growing optimism that tensions between the United States and Iran could ease.
The price drop follows a sharp 5% decrease on Tuesday, which pushed Brent below $80 for the first time since July 13. The US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), dropped 35 cents to $75.42 per barrel.
Traders reacted to reports suggesting diplomatic efforts were underway to end hostilities between Washington and Tehran. Although Iran denied that peace negotiations were taking place, US President Donald Trump disclosed that officials held an 'all-day negotiation' with Iranian representatives, describing the discussions positively while warning that the US would respond 'really hard' if a deal failed to materialise.
The prospect of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass under normal conditions, continued to weigh on crude prices. Further pressure came from the United States, where official data showed an unexpected increase in crude inventories.
