Oil Prices Plummet Below $80 Per Barrel Amid Strait of Hormuz Hopes
Oil prices plummeted on Tuesday after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's optimistic comments about resolving tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Ukrainian National News (UNN). The global benchmark Brent crude oil dropped more than 5% to $79.50 per barrel, its lowest level since July 13.
The decline in Brent was partially offset by a smaller decrease in price, but still marked a significant drop from its previous value of $80.50 per barrel. WTI crude oil, the U.S. benchmark, fell more than 5.5% to $75.77 per barrel, reaching its lowest level in three weeks.
Bessent's comments, which sparked hopes for an imminent deal to reopen the Strait, were met with caution by analysts. While Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that efforts to resolve the conflict are at a 'very advanced stage,' shipping industry experts remain less optimistic than Bessent.
