Oil Prices Plummet on Escalating Tensions with Iran
Oil prices declined on August 26, due to continued tensions between the United States and Iran. The Trump administration's announcement of new sanctions aimed at inflicting more pain on Iran's economy has contributed to the decline in oil prices.
Brent crude, the international standard, fell by 2.4% to $85.17 a barrel, while benchmark U.S. crude dropped by 2.4% to $80.37 a barrel. The price of Brent crude had previously fluctuated between $72 and $102 last month due to halting talks between the United States and Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, remains a concern for shipping companies. Top diplomats from Iran and Oman met on August 25 to discuss a phased approach to managing ship traffic through the waterway, following an attack off Oman's coast that disabled an oil tanker.
