Oil Prices Plummet on OPEC+ Production Hike and US-Iran Talks
Oil prices plummeted on Monday following an announcement by OPEC+ to boost production and fresh talks between the US and Iran. Brent crude for October delivery dropped 5.16% to $83.39 a barrel, while US benchmark WTI for September delivery declined nearly 6% to $79.66 per barrel.
The decision by OPEC+ to increase output by 188,000 barrels per day starting in September was widely anticipated by analysts, but it still had a significant impact on oil prices. The move is expected to lead to a potential surplus in the market once export flows normalize.
Rystad Energy's Jorge Leon noted that OPEC+ has completed unwinding its voluntary production cuts and now faces the challenge of managing a potential surplus. He also pointed out that many OPEC+ members cannot produce up to their official targets due to declining production capacity, making target increases less meaningful.
