Oil Prices Plummet on Reduced Geopolitical Tensions
The oil market is experiencing a decline in prices due to reduced geopolitical tensions after a temporary pause in U.S.-Iran attacks. Naeem Aslam, CIO at Zaye Capital Markets, pointed out that Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil prices are down by 5.2% and 5.4%, respectively. The immediate decline is attributed to the decrease in the geopolitical premium following the temporary pause in U.S.-Iran attacks.
However, Aslam warned that oil remains highly sensitive to shipping security, tanker movements, and energy infrastructure. Any renewed disruption could quickly restore the supply-risk premium.
The current de-escalation is not treated as permanent due to U.S. President Donald Trump's statement that the United States remains 'locked and loaded', alongside warnings of further military punishment and his insistence that Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon.
