Oil Prices Plummet Over 6% Amid Iran Conflict Tensions
Crude oil prices plummeted over 6% on Monday in response to global developments. The decline was sparked by tensions surrounding the Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for oil supply.
Brent crude fell sharply, dropping nearly 6.8% to its intraday low of $81.93 per barrel (bbl), compared to $87.93 bbl at the previous commodity market close last week. This significant drop comes after a rally of over 20% in both benchmark contracts last month.
US President Donald Trump's social media post hinted at another round of negotiations between the United States and Iran, which may lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to Iran's nuclear threat. This positive signal sent stock markets soaring, with the Sensex climbing 620.91 points or 0.8% and the broader Nifty rising 196.40 points or 0.81 percent.
Analysts believe that the decline in oil prices is a constructive development for India, easing inflationary pressures, supporting the rupee, and improving the macro outlook. Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, noted that the good progress in monsoon rains in July and Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turning buyers are positive triggers for the market.
