Oil Prices Plummet Over 7% on Trump's Iran Negotiation Announcement
Oil prices plummeted over 7% on August 2 after President Donald Trump announced that the US and Iran would resume negotiations. The decline was triggered by the news, with Brent crude for October delivery falling as much as 7.3% to $81.55 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate for September delivery dropped 5.6% to $79.94 a barrel.
The price drop is significant, considering that Brent had surged about 25% in July due to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. However, it remains unclear whether oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz will return to normal, with approximately 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passing through this waterway.
Separately, OPEC+ approved a modest increase in output, effectively restoring almost all production cuts implemented since 2023. This move leaves room for further supply increases if the Middle East conflict ends.
