Oil Prices Plunge on Trump's Iran Deal Hopes
Oil prices plummeted on Monday after US President Donald Trump announced that Iran and other Middle Eastern countries have asked for time to complete a deal that would halt Tehran's nuclear ambitions and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The development led to a significant drop in oil futures, with Brent crude falling $4.23, or 4.8%, to $83.70 per barrel. US West Texas Intermediate crude was at $79.60 a barrel, down $5.07, or 6%. These marks the biggest daily falls in absolute and percentage terms since last Monday.
The recent escalation of tensions between the US and Iran had led to a surge in oil prices, with both contracts jumping more than 20% in July. However, Trump's announcement has revived hopes for a deal, which could lead to the reopening of the Strait and an end to Iran's nuclear threat.
Despite this positive development, market analysts remain cautious, warning that details of the potential deal are still unclear and that Iran may continue to leverage its control over the Strait. As such, oil prices may not see a sustained recovery in the short term.
