Oil prices plummeted to a three-week low on August 4, falling by as much as 4% in value. Brent crude futures dropped by US$3.11, or 3.71%, to reach a price of US$80.66 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate futures fell by US$3.58, or 4.46%, to reach US$76.76 per barrel.

Both contracts had risen more than 2% earlier in the session but ultimately reversed course and declined to their lowest point since July 13. The drop was significant enough to warrant attention from investors and analysts, who are no doubt eager to understand what sparked this sudden downturn.
