Oil Prices Pull Back Amid Persistent Supply Risks
Oil prices have retreated after a sharp surge, but underlying risks to supply remain high. Commerzbank's Charlie Lay notes that Brent crude oil has pulled back by 3.9% to $96.78 last Friday, following its fourth consecutive weekly rise of 9.9%. However, the pressure on the oil market is mounting due to geopolitical tensions.
The renewed escalation in the Persian Gulf has pushed crude oil prices up sharply, with risks increasing further if another key transport route, the Strait of Bab al-Mandab, is closed. The Houthis have launched missiles and drones at Saudi oil facilities in Jizan and Yanbu, while the Saudi-led coalition responded by striking Houthi military positions in Yemen.
Saudi Arabia's use of alternative routes to circumvent disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz has been significant, but any sustained disruption to these routes could put renewed upward pressure on oil prices. Additionally, bottlenecks are looming in refined products due to significantly falling inventories.
