Oil Prices Retreat After Surging Above $100 a Barrel
Oil prices retreated on Friday after surging above $100 a barrel for the first time in months. As of 6:27 a.m. ET, Brent crude oil futures fell by 3.58% to trade at $103.78 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate futures dropped 2.17% to $99.23 per barrel.
Despite Friday's decline, markets are still on track for a weekly gain of almost 10%. The current price levels mark the first time Brent crude has surpassed $100 since mid-May.
The sharp increase in oil prices is largely driven by geopolitical fears, particularly the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Top White House advisors have discussed with President Donald Trump the possibility that the conflict could drag on beyond his current term.
Analysts are questioning whether the current supply deficit is structural or transitory. Tamas Varga from PVM Oil Associates noted that while further price spikes are possible, higher oil prices will eventually lead to reduced demand due to increased adoption of renewable energy sources.
