Oil Prices Sink as US-Iran Negotiations Spark Hopes for Hormuz Reopening
Crude oil prices plummeted on Tuesday for the third consecutive day, with September WTI crude oil (CLU26) closing down -3.35 (-4.06%) and September RBOB gasoline (RBU26) down -0.0253 (-0.80%). The steep drop in prices comes as optimism grows over negotiations between Iran and Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a major shipping route.
Tensions in the Middle East have eased slightly, with US-Iran military attacks on hold for a fourth day. However, President Trump's statement that 'there was a good chance' talks would make progress weighed on oil prices.
Despite this, concerns over global crude supplies remain high due to reduced flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The International Maritime Organization has warned that it is too dangerous to cross the strait at present, with visible transit falling sharply as Iran continues targeting tankers.
