Oil Prices Soar Above $100 a Barrel Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions
Oil prices have surged above $100 a barrel as tensions in the Middle East escalate. The price of Brent crude, the international benchmark, has been steadily increasing since last week and is now consistently above the $100 milestone for the first time since May.
The conflict between Iran and the US has been ongoing since February, but recent attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure by Houthi rebels have added to the upward pressure on prices. The latest development was a statement from Iran that it had struck a US base in Jordan in response to claims of retaliation against Iranian oil tankers.
The impact of the conflict is being felt across Europe, where natural gas stocks are at their lowest levels for 12 years due to increased demand from Asia. This has led to concerns about an expensive winter ahead for UK energy and fuel bills, with higher costs also expected to contribute to wider inflation in the months ahead.
Markets were broadly lower as oil reached this milestone, while bond yields rose significantly. Neil Wilson, Saxo UK's investor strategist, said that markets are pricing in a longer war and more disruption to global energy markets.
