Oil Prices Soar Above $100 Amid Middle East Tensions
Oil prices have surged to their highest levels since before summer as tensions in the Middle East remain high. The price for a barrel of US crude rose 6.7% to settle at $102.48, and Brent crude topped $107.63 per barrel after climbing 6.3%. This jump has worsened worries about inflation and cranked up pressure on the bond market, leading stocks to fall.
The S&P 500 dropped 0.6%, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 381 points, or 0.7%, and the Nasdaq composite 0.6% lower. The rising oil prices have also pushed the price for a gallon of regular gasoline to an average of nearly $4.28 across the US, up 34% from last year.
The increase in inflation is expected to put pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates, which could slow down the economy and curb prices for investments. A report showed that wholesale inflation accelerated to 5.4% last month, and a report on Friday will show how much consumers are feeling the effects.
