Oil Prices Soar Above $100 as Tanker Attacks Escalate
Oil prices jumped 5% on Thursday, reaching a new milestone as both major benchmarks traded above $100 per barrel. Brent crude futures rose by $5.39 (5.33%) to $106.60 a barrel, while US oil topped $100 for the first time since May at $101.21.
The surge is attributed to the escalating tanker attacks in the region, with Iran-aligned Houthis seizing control of Yemen's port of Mocha on Thursday. This development poses an additional threat to Red Sea traffic and expands concerns beyond Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
Simon-Peter Massabni, head of business development at XS.com, stated that the threat is no longer confined to a single choke point, but now includes the potential for disruptions to ripple across regional export routes, oil production sites, and other energy infrastructure.
