Oil Prices Soar as Fed Decision Looms Amid Middle East Tensions
The global market is experiencing mixed signals ahead of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision. Oil prices, however, have surged due to escalating violence in the Middle East.
The Brent crude price jumped 5.6% to $86.64 per barrel after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at American forces and the U.S. military partnered with Saudi Arabia to strike Tehran-backed militias in Iraq.
The increase has raised concerns about inflation, which had begun to slow more than expected. Traders are uncertain about what the Federal Reserve will announce, as there's a roughly 36% probability that it will raise its main interest rate for the first time in three years.
This move could curb inflation but also potentially slow down the economy and reduce stock prices. Some stocks, particularly those linked to artificial-intelligence technology, are already facing scrutiny due to their high valuations.
