Oil Prices Soar as Middle East Disruptions Threaten Prolonged Energy Shock
A surge in oil prices has left markets on edge as disruptions in the Middle East threaten to prolong an energy shock.
The fragile global energy system is facing pressure from multiple directions, with events unfolding in the Middle East and problems in oil refining combining to impact fuel supplies and the outlook for the global economy.
The situation took a turn for the worse on September 14, 2026, as Iran-backed Houthi forces seized Yemen's Red Sea coastline and tightened their control over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. At the same time, drone strikes on a key Saudi oil pipeline disrupted supplies estimated at approximately 4% of global output.
Oil prices rose by more than 3%, reaching $108 a barrel, as markets prepared for a prolonged and unpredictable challenge to the global economy.
