Oil Prices Soar as Middle East Tensions Escalate
Oil prices continued their upward trend, reaching nearly $84 per barrel for Brent crude after rising by over 10% on Monday. US benchmark crude also increased, climbing to $79.20 a barrel, up 1.4%. The price hike was largely attributed to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, specifically the Strait of Hormuz, which has been subject to increased tensions between the US and Iran.
As fighting persists in the region, oil tankers have been unable to navigate through the waterway, driving up fuel prices globally. The situation remains uncertain, with both the US and Iran asserting control over the strait. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical passage for crude deliveries from the Persian Gulf.
The price increase has yet to reach wartime levels, but it's still causing concern among investors. The S&P 500 fell by 0.8% on Monday, with chip stocks such as Micron Technology and Nvidia experiencing significant declines due to worries over the sustainability of their growth in light of AI-driven demand.
