Oil Prices Soar as Strait of Hormuz Uncertainty Persists
Oil prices rose on August 10 as uncertainty over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz persisted. Iran stated that its deal with Oman to establish new shipping lanes was in its final stages, but maintained that US conditions must be met before the waterway can reopen.
The price of Brent crude futures increased by $1.12 cents or 1.5% to $84.7 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures gained 94 cents or 1.07% to $79 a barrel. Analysts warn that supply disruptions could lead to significant price increases.
JPMorgan estimates that every additional month of disruption could add around $7 to $8 a barrel to Brent prices, while Goldman Sachs predicts that Brent could rise to $120 a barrel if shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz continue. However, both banks also expect oil prices to cool as supply expands and demand moderates.
