Oil Prices Soar as US-Iran Negotiation Deadline Expires
Oil prices surged on Monday as a 60-day negotiation window between the US and Iran expired, casting a shadow over the future of diplomatic talks.
The expiration of the agreement has exacerbated investor anxiety about potential disruptions to global oil supplies due to sharp disagreements between Washington and Tehran over critical issues, particularly the Strait of Hormuz.
As a result, the West Texas Intermediate for September delivery jumped 2.1 USD, or 2.55%, to settle at 84.50 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while Brent crude for October delivery gained 2.35 dollars, or 2.65%, to settle at 90.87 dollars a barrel on the London ICE Futures Exchange.
The expiration of the negotiation window has significant implications for the global economy, with many investors worried about the potential impact on oil supplies and prices.
