Oil Prices Soar as US-Iran Tensions Escalate Supply Disruptions
Oil prices surged on Tuesday as tensions between the US and Iran escalated, raising concerns about potential supply disruptions. The Brent crude futures climbed to their highest since July 30, reaching $91.14, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose to $85.04 a barrel.
The rise in oil prices comes as Iran has shifted to a 'fully offensive' military posture, according to a senior Iranian official, and the US has ruled out extending a temporary ceasefire agreement. This has stalled progress towards peace talks and a resumption of oil tanker traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Analyst Tim Waterer noted that uncertainty due to the lack of progress in peace talks and restricted shipping remains central to the supply risk narrative. He added that the dual chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb is highly significant, posing a major concern for global oil supply.
