Oil Prices Soar on Escalating US-Iran Conflict
The recent surge in crude oil futures is largely attributed to the escalating tensions between the US and Iran, following a series of CENTCOM strikes against Iranian military targets.
Brent crude prices pushed above $94 after reports emerged that a tanker was hit by projectile fire in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route that carries one-fifth of the world's oil. The incident highlights the ongoing risks to oil supply and the continued premium for shipping through this sensitive area.
The US strikes against Iran have added to the bullish outlook, with WTI crude futures surging 4.5% to a July high. Oil traders are now pricing in the increased risk of disruptions to oil supplies, which could have significant implications for global markets.
As long as tanker traffic remains at risk and diplomatic efforts remain stalled, oil sellers will struggle to challenge the new war premium that has emerged.
