Oil Prices Soar on Strait of Hormuz Uncertainty
Oil prices surged to a three-week high on Wednesday due to ongoing uncertainty over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The market remains sensitive to geopolitical risks, with confidence in safe passage remaining low. As a result, Brent crude futures climbed 45 cents, or 0.49 percent, to $91.47 by 0754 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures were up 45 cents, or 0.53 percent, to $85.39 a barrel.
According to KCM chief market analyst Tim Waterer, 'confidence in safe passage remains low, with shipping volumes still running well below normal levels.' This persistent uncertainty continues to keep a geopolitical risk premium embedded in the oil price.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway that carries about one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. Its disruption has been a central concern for energy markets, with commercial shipping through Hormuz continuing to face near full disruption due to disagreements over maritime traffic conditions.
